Kanvo Damier Agbada
The Agbada is much more than a loose garment. In the clothing history of West Africa, it embodies a unique way of shaping the silhouette—not as a form to be constrained, but as a presence to be elevated. Close to the Agbada from the Yoruba cultural area, it has established itself over time as a garment of distinction, associated with grand occasions. Its strength lies precisely in this idea: its loose cut does not hide the body, it gives it presence and stature.
The Kanvo, for its part, fully belongs to Beninese textile heritage. Descended from strip-woven fabrics that are then assembled, it carries within its very structure the mark of artisanal craftsmanship, time, and transmission. Historically associated with prestige and ceremonial dress in the Kingdom of Dahomey, it refers to a valuable textile closely linked to identity, rank, and a certain idea of nobility. Thus, Kanvo is not just a material; it is also a witness to know-how and memory.
By bringing together the Agbada and the Kanvo, Rosyne does not simply combine a traditional form with a heritage fabric. The house creates a dialogue between a silhouette of stature and a material of memory. The Agbada provides volume and structure, the Kanvo, historical depth and Beninese roots. From this meeting emerges a piece that does not merely evoke the past but extends it into the present.
The checkerboard pattern fully fits into this reflection. It is not just a decorative choice: it highlights the very logic of Kanvo, made of repetition, assembly, and structure. By revealing the textile’s architecture, it offers a more contemporary, clearer, and bolder interpretation. The checkerboard pattern does not simply dress the fabric; it expresses its deep construction.
The Kanvo Damier Agbada thus embodies Rosyne’s vision: to make a clothing and textile heritage into a current fashion language, capable of carrying a story without freezing it, and transforming heritage into a true style statement.
